11. The Glory

Word Count: 595
There seems to be distress in the other boat as a woman seems to be falling off the boat and a man is trying to help her up. Light shines on the boat of the two men hanging off the boat as they stare at the barrel in the water. They seem to be trying to grab the barrels and help the people in the other boat. They are clearly confident and experts of their boat as they lean horizontally out of the boat while the other side of their boat gets hit by a wave. The dark clouds part to give way to sunlight; a storm has passed and soon all will be calm. The other boat carrying goods, but isn't large enough to be traversing storms in the middle of the ocean. This means they are most likely close to the shore; the faint outline in the background being their destination or origin. Birds are scavenging the fallen supplies, another indication that they may be close to land. The couple in the small boat may have been desperate because who would risk traversing a storm in a boat as small as theirs. The two young men may have been sailing in the storm for fun (given their relaxed and colorful outfits) and saw the small boat struggling and came to their rescue. Since they're hanging out of the boat they could be sailing in the storm for the danger and difficulty. There are rock like structures nearby that may be a small island or obstacles to avoid.  This could have been where the 2 men were staying when the small boat in the storm lost their cargo. Fortunately their cargo seems to float and they should make it to their destination safely with all they came with originally. The green water may also signify lots of algae in the area and that this might be a path boats usually don't take. The modern looking clothes of the two men hanging off the boat suggests that this could be recent, however both boats and the clothes of the couple look very dated. The floating barrels of cargo also look dated suggesting the two men are out of place. This leads me to believe that these two men are from a different period of time and used their knowledge to sail a makeshift sail boat. Using bamboo as support beams, rags as sails, and string to tie the ends makes the boat look like it was handmade. Meanwhile the other boat looks more professionally crafted, however less maneuverable. This implies that the light shining through the parting clouds shines on the two men hanging off the boat, signifying a saviour for those in distress. Their method of sailing is clearly different than the other boat which may also suggest a different time period. They could also be living on an island to avoid contact with the people of this time period as they stick out very clearly. The way the boat is facing also signifies the origin of the sailors is the rock formation. The Fishermen at Sea title suggests one of boats is a fishing boat. The boat in focus lacks the equipment and isn't suited for fishing so we may assume the other boat is a fishing boat. The cargo and floating barrels may be filled with fish which is why these birds are trying to scavenge them. Perhaps these fisherman got greedy for fish and stayed for the storm and lost their cargo until the two heroes showed up to save them.

  1. Dear Sam,

This is one of the artist's earlier works and it's interesting because he's using this sort of classic set up of the boat tossed in the storm, but the children on the boat are from a more urban environment, and I think that's the point of the contrast. You've noted many of the small details, like the tiny birds scavenging along the water's edge, and the floating barrels of cargo, the bamboo, the sails of rags. Very good attention to detail and description here. If you had to then figure out their story, what would it be? How did they get there? I like all of your suppositions here and I'd be interested to know if you have an idea or an interest in what drove them out in this weather or if they got caught in the storm. Will they survive? A nicely detailed piece here.
