  1. Dear Sam,

You've got the outline of a character here, and I am curious about what he's like beneath the surface. How do you make him more specific so that he's not like a typical detective one might see in any number of TV shows? Some other ways you might think about him: what drew him to this field? How does he manage the stress of seeing people in pain, or even seeing people who have been wounded or killed? How does he compartmentalize these things? A way to figure out difficult questions like this is to think about how you or someone close to you might handle a similar situation. When you're stressed, what are your coping mechanisms? Do you check out, make jokes, go for a 10 mile run, eat Twinkies? Do you happen to know anyone who is in the criminal field or another job that requires this level of intensity? If so, talk to them and see if you can get some insight into what they do to survive. Certain types of people find it easier to manage stress, or a kind of stress, but they might also find other things stressful, such as showing emotion or being stuck in a small place with another person. See if you can discover where Bill's contradictions are--where it is that he's able to be vulnerable too. You have to make him as real and human as possible, and you have to let him and the other character lead the story---don't contort the character to fit the plot.
